Sheikh Muhammad Hasan Najafi and Sayyid Muhammad Kazim Tabataba’i Yazdi, who are both amongst our greatest scholars of jurisprudence have said: It is enough to say about the virtues of fasting that it makes human beings become similar to angels. The food of the angels is the remembrance of Allah. If we are able to become like angels, then why shouldn’t we? Of course, we are also able to tread the path of decline as well. God forbid we fall in the category mentioned in this verse: “They are like cattle; indeed, they are more astray” [7:179]. It is enough to say that from among the virtues of fasting is that human beings can practise and train for one month to become like angels.
